Concentration Statement
I am exploring the intricacies of the Gothic Era in history with a heightened focus on calligraphy. A much more profound understanding of art can be perceived from the study of the past, and analyzing aspects that I wished to highlight through the evolution of each cohesive piece conveyed an important era of art. Establishing a connection to concepts of art history as to present day art expression was an idea that I wanted to incorporate throughout my concentration.I wanted to make executive decisions about how each piece was presented and conveyed elements regarding the specific time in history in an evocative way. I restricted the palate of colors I used strictly focusing on the contrast of both black and white. This choice was made to enhance the ability to make effective composition choices, emphasize specific aspects and correlated well with the overall theme of each piece. Each piece shows the growth in which my research deepened and my skills adapted from the first piece that was an emphasis only on calligraphy but through exploring the historical aspects I was able to delve into other forms of art from that time period. By incorporating architectural study and utilizing calligraphy later to create a connection through the establishment of a figure and ground relationship. I made diligent and intentional composition decisions that grew effectively through the process of producing a well constructed concentration. Value, Shape, and emphasis were all elements I utilized to strengthen the overall presentation of each piece while contributing to the historical aspects as well.
